Objectives of the 1st mission
Preliminary
In Cambodia, any NGO who wishes to settle a project must have an accreditation and be registered :
In the Health sector we need to introduce our project to the concerned department for validation. Then we have to get the registration with the Ministry of foreign affairs, to sign a MOU, which lasts for 3 years, with specific objectives and budget planning.
- The objectives of mission 1
Validate our project with the local governmental authorities
Identify and meet our eventual partners with whom we will work
And, the very important, is to check with the targeted population the acceptancy of our technics and practises. And to verify wether we can provide a tuned answer to the pathologies.
- The local authorities
1 The district hospital director M Peov Sovanarin :
Meeting and discussion : We were introduced to M Peov who met us in the hospital offices
Explanation of the technics we use and the objectives of the project
- Provide free care to vulnerable population of the district of Moeung Russei, by working in the dispensary of Ta Luos
- We use the technics of acupuncture and massage which are recignize by the World Health Organization for beeing efficient and valuable on many diseases and trauma. Moreover, these technics are easy to implement and costless
- .We wish to transfer our technics to local nurses and midwifes in order that they will be able to have valuable care on pregnant women, along their pregnancy on pain release and prevention of miscarriage
- As we are not yet registered, we asked M Peov whether we have his authorization to start working as the process with the central authorities may last quite a long time : he gave us the permission and encouraged us to work as soon as possible.
- We will propose a training session in the hospital, and will be hosted in the rooms at the hospital : we will send M Peov a detailed program..
At the final meeting , and before leaving we had the great pleasure to share lunch together and talk about the future mission in november .
We were given a recommendation letter to support our project when we will go the the central authorities
We also were told about the opportunity to work together in the hospital .
2 The chief of Ta Luos and the surrounding villages
We were warmly welcomed by the community and villages majors.to whom we explained how we are working and which pathologies we can help with the Traditional Chinese medecine.
Some of them came to the dispensary and got acupuncture . They found it very effiscient and helpful
We got a recommendation letter to support our project too.
3 Mam Satha, the manager of the dispensary of Ta Luos
She is the one who prepared all the logistic and organisation
We had a whole room dedicated to our services, and all along our working days she was very helpful
She is retiring soon, but still will help us in november.
We had a fantastic lunch the last day with the whole team. That was a great day, and experience.
We definitely are wishing to have a sustainable presence and action here.
The dispensary entrance
The practical and operational phase
The local population were informed of our venue and we couls start the clinics on Monday noon time
As we are staying not less than one hour per patient, we could hardly have more than 10 people a day, but the last day, we cured 16 patients…
- People came to register and make appointment at the dispensary
As the technics are very innovativ for cambodian. We first had the nurses and midwives as patients : and they were explaining after to other people that it was not painful and that they had good results
More and more people were coming although we could only have around 10 to 12 perday.
4 patients could come for a 2nd treatment during the session.
.
We trained our translator to ask basic questions when people were coming to register : the datas would allow a good follow up of the patient in the future. This allowed to save time, as he was questioning on the pain and health problems of the patient.
During 3,5 days we treated 45 patients, both men and women from 28 years old til 85.
Place to register for appointment
2) The session
We made a complete diagnosis with historical health problems for each patient.
They were talking easily and with confidence ; describing clearly their problem and feeling. This was very helpful for us as we were not speaking khmer. Our translator was very skillful and understood well the priorities.
- Pathologies we treated
- Rheumatoid arhritis, longind for many years
- insomnia
- Trauma links to working conditions or falls
- Pain due to surgeries…
- Memory, post traumatic syndroms…
- Stroke,
- ….
.4) Treatments
We were working as a team . This allowed us to provide a complete treatment with both acupuncture and tuina massages.
This organization is definitely the best we had, as we ensure a good diagnosis and a tuned protocol when sharing our experiences.
Our translator was either in the room with us or just outside behind the door, for preserving intimacy and was translating our specific questions to the patient.
We did not know how the patients would react with the needle : in fact, even if some of them were a little bit afraid, they realizd that this was not painful at all, and gave us their confidence.
They were surprise when after the session ,they really had less pain and would move better and feel good.!
We asked them to control and breathe while we were working in order to increase the effisciency of the treatment.
They were collaborating very well and were so involved and concerned !
We asked them to quote their pain before and after the treatment on a scale from 0 to 10 : 0 was no pain, 10 was terrible pain.
We gain each time between 2 and 4 degree less, which is a good result..
Each patient was testifying of their experience with our treatment to other people, and more and more were coming.
We are convinced now that our technics are suitable for cambodian people.
Knee pain and lombar pain, treated with moxa on needles
Massage Tuina on cervical pain
- As a conclusion
We were greatly and warmly welcomed, and were expecting such good working conditions and great confidence !
The use of our technics were easily implemented and accepted by the patients. We think i twill bring a great help to the local population.
They were surprised of the results, and even if they still had some little pain, we would have done it with a second treatment.
They also were happy not to take drugs as they are now feeling a few secondary effects on their health.
Acupuncture and using needles was well accepted, even though if some were a little be afraid when coming in, they realizd that this technic has nothing to do with the needle used for injection and which is painful most of the time.
They were all feeling better afterwards, and recovered from pain they had for a long time.
We are convinced of the effisciency of acupuncture and tuina massage ont the different pathologies we had. And the population is now aware of the quality and the pain release they felt., and still feel after 1 month.
We wish to go on offering care to the Moeung Russei district population, but also to allow nurses and midwives to learn some technics, when possible, and to be able to use them day to day on their patients.
We are now preparing some training sessions, for 2020, providing we get financial support from our funders. The themes would be :
Obstetric and gynecology for pregnant women
Pain release
Basic protocols for primary pathologies such as head aches, flew, insomnia etc…
The next mission will be in november ,wich a group of 6 to 8 doctors.
